HOW PHOENIX'S VOICE GOT STARTED:

On June 6th, 2012, Nina's son, Phoenix, was assaulted by his special needs teacher. After a blurry month of no progress of any kind from the state and no support from their local media, Nina decided to talk about what happened on her personal blog. The response from family, friends and even complete strangers was instantaneous and overwhelming.

What happened to Phoenix made Nina realize just how many reported cases of special needs abuse and mistreatment in schools there was and, more disturbing, how many must be going on unreported like Phoenix's. Together with friend and fellow Autism mom, Kristy, she decided to start Phoenix's Voice, a blog and Facebook community dedicated to collecting the scattered stories of abuse and bullying in special needs classrooms, raising awareness and talking with others facing similar situations. Because when we discuss what is broken, together, we can find a way to fix it.

If you or someone you know would like to get in touch with Phoenix's Voice to share a personal account, news article, etc, you can find us on Facebook, Twitter or email phoenixs.voice1@gmail.com

Together we can speak up for those who can’t. We can protect the childhood of those walking away from their mothers and fathers into the unknown. We will fight for the proud smiles of little boys and girls who are tougher than us. - Nina.
